"jackpot!" the hi-pitched voice yells, "that's one hell of a jewelry box! and the safe!"
"tonight, my friend", I feel the voice come out of me, "might really be our big golden ticket."
"don't say that," he says, trying to hold back a smile. after all these years we just might have made things right enough for us. and that's all we can really do here. I gesture towards the open window.
"what's the matter?" he asks, laughing, smile beaming across his face. "no red carpet?"
with my partner holding the jewelry box and me holding the safe, we jump down into the grass below. I let my legs and arms go loose to absorb the fall. once again, somewhere between a half-roll and just crumpling to the ground. hurts a bit every time but that's when my whole body knows we won, that we did a job well done. my partner and I pull ourselves up and walk with the goods in our arms to the van. we open the doors, push the safe to the back of the van, and he hands me the jewelry box to keep in the floor well by my feet. we back out of the drive as we see the house, now swallowed in flames completely, get smaller and smaller in our sight.
we turn the corner.
