"kid's room," the hi-pitched voice grumbles.  I feel my body deflate in a sigh.  we're leaving with our lives and not much else.  I grab a video game console and take the controllers too, leaving the television on the dresser.  we know not to be seen outside walking away from a house while carrying a television.  we jump down into the grass below.  I let my legs and arms go loose to absorb the fall.  once again, somewhere between a half-roll and just crumpling to the ground.  hurts a bit every time but that's when my whole body knows we won, even if all we won is a shot at seeing tomorrow.  my partner and I pull ourselves up and walk with the goods in our arms to the van.  we open the doors and I put the game console and the controllers in my side's foot well by the passenger seat.  we back out of the drive as we see the house, now swallowed in flames completely, get smaller and smaller in our sight.

we turn the corner.
